India played Oman on 06-09-2019 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. Sunil Chhetri put India up in front after 24 minutes through a Brandon Fernandes free-kick from the edge of the box. This is a video of the goal taken by a fan :- India dominated the first half and went in to the break with a 1-0 lead. Then, after minutes of literally nothing, the Indian defence broke down as Al Alawi scored two goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes, handing Oman the win. Neither team deserved to win but Oman have 3 points now and are on top of the group along with Qatar who smashed 6 past a hapless Afghanistan. India next play Qatar away. PLAYER RATINGS :- 1. GURPREET SINGH SANDHU - 8.0 (GK) Gurpreet was fantastic in goal against Oman. He saved a header from point blank range. His reflexes were top class. He could not do much to not concede. Igor Štimac |
Stephan Constantine 's exit might be a blessing for the future of Indian football. The All India Football Federation finally realized the need to bring about a revolution in Indian football and Igor Štimac might just be the correct man up for this job. After a disappointing campaign in Asian Cup 2019 , managing just 1 win out of 3 games, followed by Constantine's resignation from his position as a manager, the technical committee of the AIFF then selected the former World Cupper after interviewing four shortlisted candidates, including former Bengaluru FC manager Albert Roca.
PLAYING CAREER :-
The 51 year old made 55 appearances for Croatia scoring just two
goals. Štimac won the 1987 FIFA Youth Championship in Chile as a member
of the Yugoslavia under-20 team. As a member of the Croatia national
football team, Štimac secured a third place spot earning a bronze in
the 1998 World Cup Finals. At the club level, Štimac played for Hajduk Split, Derby County and West Ham United among others.MANAGERIAL CAREER :-
His managerial career started in 2001 when he coached the youth team of Hajduk Split. He then guided the senior team of Hajduk Split to the "Croatian First Football League" title in 2004-05. In that same season, he lead his team to the final of the "Croatian Football Cup", which his team lost. Stimač was then appointed as the boss of the Croatian National Team in 2012, at the age of 51. Despite facing criticism initially, he took Croatia to number 4 in the FIFA rankings. He was in charge of the team when they played the World Cup Qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He resigned just before the Final Playoff round match of the qualifiers.Stars such as Mateo Kovacic and Alen Halilovic made their debut during his reign. He also had a few stints with some clubs in Asia.
EXPECTED STYLE OF PLAY :-
As India is better at defending than attacking and also taking into account the fact that Igor Stimač was a defender himself, the Blue Pilgrims can expect a defensive style of play, with goals coming mostly from counter-attacks and set-pieces. Pacy players and ball playing defenders will be important to play this style of football.
CONCLUSION :-
With bags of experience, both as a player and as a manager, Igor Stimač is the most high profile manager India has ever had. The Indian National team will benefit from the arrival of the Croat. He will be the guiding light for the young and talented Indian players. We, The Oriental Journeyman team, expect Igor Stimač's reign to be successful and we hope that the Indian team reaches new heights in the near future.
